[Divine Souls:4455] The Essence.......Thoughts of His Holiness Nirankari Baba Hardev Singh

RELIGION

What is Religion ?

What is the definition of Religion? To be a religious person I would
suggest that one must have the feelings of Love and Compassion
embedded within his heart. If you think that without this you can be
religious, it is not possible. It is like taking the foundation of a
building away and what will result? - it will simply collapse. The
fundamental requirement of being religious is to bring about these
virtues in our day to day living. If we think we can harbour feelings
of hatred or promote acts of violence and become religious we are
sadly mistaken. The edifice of our religion will not stand as the
foundation will fracture and weaken the structure.
Today I see the claim of so called religious people and it is
generally considered that if we visit holy places or undertake
religious rites or accomplish certain ceremonies alone, then we are
considered to be religious. Does the performance of rituals mean that
we have become religious? Is it not the case that the spirituality
within us has been vacated and today we are simply carrying empty
boxes? There are no jewels of devotion within us so how can we make
such claims? We are emptied of love and compassion, so where do we
stand? The performance of rituals is incomplete if we do not have love
in our act. We also fall short if the intention behind our worship is
not sacred. Without love and sacred intent, can our claims of being
religious be justified? The reality of the situation which I often
remind myself of is that, 'I did not know how to worship until I knew
how to love'. So love is a fundamental requirement to be religious.
