Roohaniyat: 3-27-10: Good Morning everyone and welcome to the Roohaniyat world!
The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him. Every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions. One day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, with smoke rolling up to the sky. He felt that the worst had happened, and everything was lost. He was stunned with disbelief, grief, and anger. He cried out, "God! How could you do this to me?"
Early the next day, he was awakened by the sound of a ship approaching the island! It had come to rescue him! "How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied.
It's easy to get discouraged when things are going bad, but we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of our pain and suffering. Remember that the next time your little hut seems to be burning to the ground, it just may be a smoke signal that summons the Grace of God.
Since childhood, my mother had my mind tuned to become a dentist when I grow up. I was so focused on the fact that I will grow up to be a dentist that I forgot that God had His own plans lined up for me. I took up medical subjects in college but after 2 years into college, I got married. I was in a boarding in college, so I decided to come back home and just to kill time till my visa came, I took up a Hotel Management course, which was closer to home and convenient. Little did I realize that it would take a long long time till my immigration paperwork would go through….because God: had His own plans for me. Not only did I end up finishing that course, but I also finished my internship in Chandigarh: And then, my visa came.
When I came to Florida, I found out that was no Dental school here locally and being a new mother, I could not imagine leaving my daughter behind to go to school, out of town. So, I had to give up my dreams of becoming a dentist, but then opportunity knocked my door and I got into the Assisted Living business in 1997. Assisted Living is something like a "Retirement Home for the Elderly" but it comes along with medical services. After I got into the business, I found out that Nova University in Davie had started a Dental program, but by then, my choice of career had already changed. God had made sure that there was No local dental program at the time when I was looking.
After I started the business, I realized that Assisted Living business is actually a hotel except that the guests here are all elderly and frail residents. I then realized that God had His own perfect plan for me. He always knew that this is the line that was meant for me, so He had a purpose for sending me to the Hotel Management School. He also had a purpose for setting my mind to Dentistry, because that developed my interest into the medical field.
So, I decided to take up Nursing to perfect myself in my Assisted Living field. Around the same time, I found out that our Guru ji: Baba Hardev Singh ji was visiting America, but because I could not go to visit Him, I happened to talk to a fellow devotee who was able to see Him and asked him to seek blessings for me. I happened to tell him that I was going into Nursing because I started this business. After some time, I got a call back from him saying that he was able to seek blessings from Guruji, but when he casually mentioned that I was starting nursing school, our Guruji's wife: who we call Mataji, told him: No, tell her not to do nursing, instead she should do something in Computers.
When he gave me the message, I was taken aback. "What do I have to do with computers?" I thought. I had nothing what so ever to do in that field, and of course, it only made sense to do nursing. Nevertheless, my faith was strong and I totally believed in surrender, so I took the instructions as a blessing and for the next 2 years, I took up short courses in computers. It was only when I started the computer classes, I realized that the spare parts box under the table was actually the computer and not the computers toolbox. And I also realized that computers did not have any TV's, they only had Monitors.
Our facility was being inspected by the state one day, and I casually mentioned to the inspector that I had planned for nursing school, thinking that the inspector will be impressed by my inclination to do my job better. Instead, the inspector told me that if I had gone in for nursing school, the state would not have let me practice nursing on our own patients, because under the Florida law, practicing nursing on your own facility patients is considered a "Conflict Of Interest". He showed my how my computer courses could help my in my business with the patient documentation, medication charts and the entire medical paperwork to run an Assisted Living Facility more efficiently. Today, I can see how the entire business is based on computers and that how medical subjects and experience have taught me what I needed for the medical part of the business.
Blessed were all those moments when God did not give me what I wanted, because those moments were the very moments, when God was working on giving me what I actually needed. Today, when I look back, I realize how God had made me for what I do and He worked on me and trained me to do my job to the best of my capability.
When I asked God for Strength, He gave me difficult situations to Face.
When I asked God for Brain and Brown, He gave me puzzles in Life to solve.
When I asked God for Happiness, He showed me some unhappy people.
When I asked God for Wealth, He showed me how to work hard.
When I asked God for Favors, He gave me opportunities to work hard.
When I asked God for Peace, He showed me how to help the weak and the frail.
God gave me Nothing that I WANTED, Instead, He gave me Everything that I NEEDED.
Next time, when things don't go your way, remember that God has a better plan in the Making: A plan that will result in a better and a brighter you! …Because God's ways are always Right!
Because, Faith is not "Hoping" that God CAN, but it is "Knowing" that He WILL!
