Visit to NJ Food Bank - February 20, 2010
With the blessings of His Holiness Satguru Baba Hardev Singh Ji, Sant Nirankari Mission New York Metro Team kick-started the Guru Pooja Diwas celebrations for this year on February 20, 2010 by doing Community Service at the local New Jersey Food Bank located in Hillside, NJ. This was a follow up to the hugely successful food drive and a similar visit for voluntary work last year. The contact with the NJ Food Bank was made in order to plan for the entire year of voluntary service and despite of best efforts no dates were available till end of March. The persistence of youth volunteers and enthusiasm attracted good attention of the officials and the first available cancellation was allotted to Sant Nirankari Mission. There were about 25 saints that gathered outside the huge warehouse of the NJ Food Bank at 11:15AM. The slot was for two hours from 11:30AM-1:30PM. The task assigned to the NY Metro team was to sort the mailers along with the printed return envelopes to be mailed to thousands of houses in order to make people aware of the activities undertaken by the Food Bank and to gather donations. In conversation with the officials co-ordinating this assignment, it was learnt that making people aware of the activities performed by the Food Bank was an important exercise as it brings lots of monetary donation, which in turn can be directed towards many homeless/foodless people living in the NJ State, to provide them with basic essentials to survive. To sum it up, it turned out to be an amazing experience for both sides. The NJ Food Bank representative thanked the support and effort of the entire NY Metro Youth team and in turn the mission volunteers were able to imbibe the teachings of Satguru by performing selfless sewa and extending helping hand to provide millions of people with necessary support. The NJ Food Bank was impressed by the discipline, unity and love that was shown by each member while performing the assigned task. As a parting gesture the Youth Volunteers from New York Metro presented a T-Shirt to the NJ Food Bank official over-looking the task. All attending saints proactively vowed to offer themselves for such volunteer service time and again in future even before NJ Foodbank officials implied that they are in greater need of such dedicated service. With the blessings of Satguru Baba Ji, performing such services in the local community is going to be a way forward for SNM NY Metro Team. Dhan Nirankar Ji!
