Yours is very good question. The concept of GUNAS or attributes of nature explained in chapter 14 of Geeta. In a nutshell , all the creation{ PRAKRITI)which includes Jivas are controlled BY THESE ATTRIBUTES viz Sattava, Rajas, and Tamas.The Tamas denotes inertia.The Rajsas is resposible for all the energy, motion and various activities of both material and mental domains . The Sattava is the state of equilibrium.The Nirankar, Satguru and enlightened saints rise above these Gunas and attain a state of equanimity.Only a few reach this state.
