This is a beutiful question. From the literal definition of Nirankar/Nir-akar(Formless) it may appear that since air doesn't have any form it is also Nirankar or formless. But as mentioned in our Holy books that God is omnipresent/Omnipotent and It does not have any begining or any end but  it can be seen.

 

Some refrences:

 

Bible says: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.[John 8:32]

Meera ji says: Payo ji maine Ram Ratan dhan payo

Kabir ji says: Log kahe kagaz ki lekhi main kahoon akhiyan  se dekhi

Avtar bani says: Pehle darshan magron priti pher bhala koi jaap kare, kahe Avtar Bina Rab bekhe Jaap nahin Virlap kare!!

 

This list can go on and on. All these confirm that God can be seen.

 

Now the question arises that how can we see the formless?

 

From The Bhagavad Gita Ch. 11, verse 54.

The Lord said:

 

By single-minded devotion I can be known in this form
and seen in reality and also entered into, O Arjuna.

 

And Avtar Bani says:

 

Rab Milda hai guru sharni jayaan satguru parda khole jaan ,
kahe Avtar Gursikh eh bujhe Satguru munho bole jaan!!

 

So God can be seen when we go in the benevolence of True master and he blesses us with divine knowledge.

To answer the question about Difference between Air and Nirankar.

 

Nirankar is omnipresent but Air is not. Scientist have proved that when you create vaccuum there is no air. But when we get this divine knowledge from True Master you will know that "if there is vaccuum or no vaccum Nirankar is always there". Scientists have proved that there are planets where there is "no air" but scriptures says "Lakahaan akashaan akaash,lakhaan patalaan pataal...." and

 

Avtar bani says: [Verse 151]

IS SRISHTI DE KAN KAN NU JO APNE AAP SAMBHAL RAHAE,
EHO IK RAMAJ HAI JISNU KUL JAMANA BHAAL RAHAE,

NIrankar is creator and Air is one of its many creations like water,fire,earth,moon, stars..Creator is definetly different than the creation. Rev. Nirmal Joshi ji has explained all these elements[creations] in his book "Manthan". This can be understood once we attain divine vision from the True master.
